Deep work timer: 50 minutes of writing (brown noise), when the house is busy

One block of writing with brown noise underneath. Fifty minutes, the length of a therapy hour, with ten minutes off afterwards.

50:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Let your tongue rest down, away from the roof of your mouth. It works with other people in the house. You do not need silence. Follow the instructions and let the rest look after itself.

1 Before you start

  • Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.
  • Accept that the first five minutes will feel like wading. Wading counts.
  • Close the door, or put headphones on, whichever signals "working" to the people around you.
  • Decide in advance that a bad sentence is still progress.
  • Dim the screen slightly. Bright screens make long sessions harder than they need to be.

2 While the timer runs

  • When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
  • If nothing is working, write badly on purpose for two minutes.
  • If you are stuck, say the problem out loud. It changes what you can see.
  • If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.

3 When it ends

  • Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.
  • Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.
  • Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.

4What to put on

brown noise — Lower and softer than white noise, closer to a waterfall heard from a distance. Good if white noise feels too hissy.
