Deep work timer: 25 minutes of coding (a fan or air conditioner), when you have already had a long week

One block of coding with a fan or air conditioner underneath. One pomodoro, long enough to get somewhere and short enough to start.

25:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Then find the nearest sound. It's probably your own breathing. Long weeks are cumulative. This is a small subtraction. No preamble. We start with the body.

1 Before you start

  • Close the door, or put headphones on, whichever signals "working" to the people around you.
  • Decide that today's session does not have to be good. It has to happen.
  • Turn off notifications for the next block, not just to silent.
  • Choose one question to answer in this block, rather than a whole subject to cover.
  • Have a piece of paper beside you for the thoughts that will try to interrupt.

2 While the timer runs

  • If a thought will not leave, give it one line on the page and return to the task.
  • Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.
  • If you feel the urge to check something, write it on the paper beside you and keep going. Deal with the list afterwards.
  • When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.

3 When it ends

  • Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.
  • Have a drink of water before you check anything.
  • Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.

4What to put on

a fan or air conditioner — A constant mechanical hum with no variation. The lack of change is the point — nothing in it asks for your attention.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
