A 25-minute block for thesis writing, with café murmur, when the weather has kept you inside
A single 25-minute block for thesis writing — sections, not the whole thing.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Start with the noise that is already in the room. We are not going to try to remove it yet. Bad weather is a decent excuse to stay in and do this. Straight through, at a normal pace.
1 Before you start
- Turn off notifications for the next block, not just to silent.
- Remember that motivation usually arrives after starting, not before.
- Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.
- Decide in advance that a bad sentence is still progress.
- Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.
2 While the timer runs
- If you are stuck, say the problem out loud. It changes what you can see.
- If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.
- When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.
- When you get an idea for something else, park it. Do not follow it.
3 When it ends
- Have a drink of water before you check anything.
- Look out of a window for thirty seconds. Your eyes have been at one distance for a while.
- Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.
4What to put on
café murmur — The blur of other people talking, with none of the words close enough to follow. Some people concentrate better with a low level of company.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
If this block does not fit, try 90-minute design work session with a stream and a timer, when you are on your own, 90-minute focus session for problem solving with brown noise, when you only have a few minutes or 90-minute focus block for research — café murmur, before you go back to something hard.
