A 25-minute block for problem solving, with a train carriage, on a day that started badly
A single 25-minute block for problem solving — before looking anything up.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Let your tongue rest down, away from the roof of your mouth. A day that started badly does not have to stay that way. We'll be efficient and then you can get on with your day.
1 Before you start
- Decide now what you will do when the timer ends. Otherwise the decision will eat the first five minutes.
- If your mind is already racing, write down the three loudest thoughts before you begin.
- Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.
- Decide in advance that a bad sentence is still progress.
- Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".
2 While the timer runs
- If you feel restless, change your posture rather than your task.
- If the task suddenly feels impossible, make it smaller rather than stopping. One paragraph. One function. One row.
- Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.
- When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
3 When it ends
- Put the notes you made where you will find them next time.
- Note what you actually got done, not what you meant to get done.
- Have a drink of water before you check anything.
4What to put on
a train carriage — Rhythmic, low, and slightly rumbly. Many people find the motion-and-noise combination easier to work to than silence.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
If this block does not fit, try Focus session for exam revision: 45 minutes, rain on a window, if you have five quiet minutes, 45-minute editing session with a fireplace and a timer, when the day has been loud or Deep work timer: 90 minutes of editing (brown noise), if you are doing this instead of scrolling.
