90-minute focus session for writing with a stream, when you are waiting for something

90 minutes on writing — the first draft, not the good version. One full ultradian cycle, for work that needs a long runway.

90:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

You don't have to empty your mind. Nobody has ever managed that, including the people who wrote the instructions. Waiting is dead time you can spend on this instead. This works better when you don't overthink it.

1 Before you start

  • Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.
  • Accept that the first five minutes will feel like wading. Wading counts.
  • Take one slow breath before you press start, so the session has a beginning.
  • Plan to leave the last two minutes for writing down where to pick up next time.
  • Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.

2 While the timer runs

  • When you catch yourself re-reading the same sentence, stop and write down what you were looking for.
  • When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.
  • When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
  • If a thought will not leave, give it one line on the page and return to the task.

3 When it ends

  • Note what you actually got done, not what you meant to get done.
  • Put the notes you made where you will find them next time.
  • Say the session is finished, out loud if you can. It marks the boundary.

4What to put on

a stream — Running water with small variation. Softer than rain and less repetitive than a fan.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
