90-minute focus block for decluttering — a fireplace, after eating too much

A timer, a short prep list, and 90 minutes to move things out.

90:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

You don't have to empty your mind. Nobody has ever managed that, including the people who wrote the instructions. Do this sitting up, not lying down, if you have just eaten. Follow the instructions and let the rest look after itself.

1 Before you start

  • Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.
  • Remind yourself that you are allowed to produce something mediocre in the first pass.
  • Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
  • Lower the bar until starting feels almost silly, then start.
  • Close the door, or put headphones on, whichever signals "working" to the people around you.

2 While the timer runs

  • When you have drifted for the fifth time, that is still four returns. Keep going.
  • If you start tidying your desk, that is avoidance. Sit back down.
  • When you catch yourself re-reading the same sentence, stop and write down what you were looking for.
  • Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.

3 When it ends

  • Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.
  • Leave the desk tidier than you found it. Two minutes now saves ten later.
  • Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.

4What to put on

a fireplace — Crackles and a low roar underneath. Warm, irregular, and undemanding.
