Focus session · writing · 45 min
45-minute focus session for writing with plain quiet, when you are somewhere unfamiliar
45 minutes on writing — the first draft, not the good version. A single class period, the length most people can hold before the quality drops.
45:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Let your shoulders drop about a centimetre. That is roughly where most of us keep the day. It travels well. Hotels, spare rooms, other people’s sofas. Keep it simple: breath in, breath out, notice.
1 Before you start
- Dim the screen slightly. Bright screens make long sessions harder than they need to be.
- Expect to want to stop at about the eight-minute mark. That is normal and it passes.
- Have a piece of paper beside you for the thoughts that will try to interrupt.
- Give yourself permission to stop when the timer ends, even mid-sentence.
- Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.
2 While the timer runs
- If you are suddenly sleepy, stand up for ten seconds and sit back down.
- When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.
- When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
- If you feel restless, change your posture rather than your task.
3 When it ends
- Have a drink of water before you check anything.
- Write one line about where to start next time. Future you will be grateful.
- Say the session is finished, out loud if you can. It marks the boundary.
4What to put on
plain quiet — No added sound at all. If you have a quiet room, that is usually better than any recording of one.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
