45-minute focus session for reading with a fireplace, when you have been putting it off

45 minutes on reading — pages rather than paragraphs. A single class period, the length most people can hold before the quality drops.

45:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Notice where your body touches the chair. That contact is doing more for you than it looks. You have been putting this off. Starting is the only step that matters. Follow the instructions and let the rest look after itself.

1 Before you start

  • Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.
  • Expect to want to stop at about the eight-minute mark. That is normal and it passes.
  • Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.
  • Decide that today's session does not have to be good. It has to happen.
  • Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.

2 While the timer runs

  • When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
  • The first urge to stop usually arrives early. Sit through it once and the second one is quieter.
  • It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
  • If you start tidying your desk, that is avoidance. Sit back down.

3 When it ends

  • Take the break away from the screen, even if it is just the other side of the room.
  • If it went badly, note one thing that worked anyway. There is usually one.
  • Write one line about where to start next time. Future you will be grateful.

4What to put on

a fireplace — Crackles and a low roar underneath. Warm, irregular, and undemanding.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
