45-minute focus session for language practice with café murmur, when you are somewhere unfamiliar
45 minutes on language practice — repetition rather than novelty. A single class period, the length most people can hold before the quality drops.
45:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Quick check: is anything genuinely urgent in this exact minute? Usually the answer is no. It travels well. Hotels, spare rooms, other people’s sofas. Straight through, at a normal pace.
1 Before you start
- Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".
- Promise yourself you will not check anything until the timer ends, including "just quickly".
- Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.
- Let go of the version of this task you imagined doing perfectly.
- Have a piece of paper beside you for the thoughts that will try to interrupt.
2 While the timer runs
- When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
- Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
- Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.
- When you get an idea for something else, park it. Do not follow it.
3 When it ends
- If it went badly, note one thing that worked anyway. There is usually one.
- Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.
- Put the notes you made where you will find them next time.
4What to put on
café murmur — The blur of other people talking, with none of the words close enough to follow. Some people concentrate better with a low level of company.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
