45-minute focus block for brainstorming — rain on a window, when you have woken up too early
A timer, a short prep list, and 45 minutes to generate options.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Take one breath that is slightly slower than the last one. That is enough to start. Waking too early is a specific kind of frustrating. This helps with the frustration. We'll go through it in order, without much decoration.
1 Before you start
- Take one slow breath before you press start, so the session has a beginning.
- Tell yourself the goal is time spent, not output produced.
- Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.
- Decide what you will do if you get stuck: write the problem out, then move on.
- Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.
2 While the timer runs
- When you catch yourself re-reading the same sentence, stop and write down what you were looking for.
- If you feel the urge to check something, write it on the paper beside you and keep going. Deal with the list afterwards.
- When you get an idea for something else, park it. Do not follow it.
- If you are bored, the boredom is usually the last thing before something clicks.
3 When it ends
- Have a drink of water before you check anything.
- Decide whether the next block is the same task or a different one. Do not drift into it.
- Take the break away from the screen, even if it is just the other side of the room.
4What to put on
rain on a window — Steady rain is broadband noise with a slow natural rhythm. It masks speech and keyboard clatter without being interesting enough to listen to.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
