25-minute reading session with brown noise and a timer, when you are waiting for something
Sit down, press start, and read properly for 25 minutes. One pomodoro, long enough to get somewhere and short enough to start.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Let your tongue rest down, away from the roof of your mouth. Waiting is dead time you can spend on this instead. No preamble. We start with the body.
1 Before you start
- Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".
- Let go of the version of this task you imagined doing perfectly.
- Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.
- Lower the bar until starting feels almost silly, then start.
- Dim the screen slightly. Bright screens make long sessions harder than they need to be.
2 While the timer runs
- If nothing is working, write badly on purpose for two minutes.
- The first urge to stop usually arrives early. Sit through it once and the second one is quieter.
- When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
- When you get an idea for something else, park it. Do not follow it.
3 When it ends
- Do not immediately open the thing you were avoiding. Give the block a proper end.
- Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.
- Look out of a window for thirty seconds. Your eyes have been at one distance for a while.
4What to put on
brown noise — Lower and softer than white noise, closer to a waterfall heard from a distance. Good if white noise feels too hissy.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
