25-minute focus session for research with brown noise, if you are doing this instead of scrolling

25 minutes on research — with a note file open beside you. One pomodoro, long enough to get somewhere and short enough to start.

25:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Start with the noise that is already in the room. We are not going to try to remove it yet. Choosing this over scrolling counts as a good decision, even a small one. This is a short one, so let's use the time properly.

1 Before you start

  • Put the thing you keep reaching for out of arm's reach.
  • Promise yourself you will not check anything until the timer ends, including "just quickly".
  • Take one slow breath before you press start, so the session has a beginning.
  • Accept that the first five minutes will feel like wading. Wading counts.
  • Get water now, so you do not have to get up in fifteen minutes.

2 While the timer runs

  • If you start tidying your desk, that is avoidance. Sit back down.
  • Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
  • If you are suddenly sleepy, stand up for ten seconds and sit back down.
  • When you get an idea for something else, park it. Do not follow it.

3 When it ends

  • Leave the file open if you are coming back. Closing it makes restarting harder.
  • Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.
  • Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.

4What to put on

brown noise — Lower and softer than white noise, closer to a waterfall heard from a distance. Good if white noise feels too hissy.
