Focus session · data work · 25 min

25-minute data work session with a library and a timer, if you are sceptical about all of this

Sit down, press start, and work through the numbers for 25 minutes. One pomodoro, long enough to get somewhere and short enough to start.

25:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Your breathing doesn't have to change yet. Let it be whatever size it currently is. Scepticism is welcome. You do not have to believe anything for this to work. Straight through, at a normal pace.

1 Before you start

  • Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".
  • Let go of the version of this task you imagined doing perfectly.
  • Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.
  • Choose one question to answer in this block, rather than a whole subject to cover.
  • Take one slow breath before you press start, so the session has a beginning.

2 While the timer runs

  • When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
  • If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.
  • It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
  • When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.

3 When it ends

  • Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.
  • Note what you actually got done, not what you meant to get done.
  • Have a drink of water before you check anything.

4What to put on

a library — Almost nothing: distant footsteps, a chair, a page turning. Useful if you want the feeling of a room where work is normal.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
