How to use Soft 4-7-8 breathing for the commute, when you are at home and cannot settle
A the hold cut short, the long exhale kept pattern, counted for you on screen.
Follow the circle. It counts for you.
How it works
Breathe in through your nose for 4 counts, hold for 4. Then out for 8, slowly, without pushing. Being at home and unable to settle is a very specific problem. Simple things first: contact, weight, temperature.
Why it can help
If you are feeling revved up, this is one of the fastest honest ways to take the edge off without pretending.
The pattern, in seconds
| Phase | Length | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Inhale | 4s | 0s |
| Hold | 4s | 4s |
| Exhale | 8s | 8s |
One round is 16 seconds. At the default 12 rounds this practice runs 192 seconds — about 3 minutes — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.
Good for
- when you cannot sleep and do not want to get up
- while you are waiting for something to start
- when your hands are cold and your chest is tight
Tips
- Practising when you are calm makes it available when you are not.
- The pauses should never feel like a competition. Shorten them if they do.
- If holding for the full count feels tight, drop every number by one. The shape matters more than the size.
Please note
If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
If this rhythm does not suit you, try 5-7 breathing: 4 rounds for the hours after people leave, when your attention is scattered, Tight box breathing — 4 · 1 · 4 · 1 — for travel days, when the day has been loud or Uneven box breathing: 4 rounds for travel days, when you have tried everything else.
