How to use Slow box breathing
A 5-5-5-5 rhythm to anchor your focus during a busy day.
Follow the circle. It counts for you.
How it works
Inhale for 5, hold for 5, exhale for 5, hold for 5. Visualize drawing the outline of a square with each breath. It's that straightforward. The simplicity is its strength. Ground yourself in the tangible: the desk, the chair, the weight of your laptop.
Why it can help
This pattern distracts the part of your mind that might be spinning with to-do lists, giving you a consistent, predictable routine to focus on.
The pattern, in seconds
| Phase | Length | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Inhale | 5s | 0s |
| Hold | 5s | 5s |
| Exhale | 5s | 10s |
| Hold again | 5s | 15s |
One round is 20 seconds. At the default 6 rounds this practice runs 120 seconds — about 2 minutes — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.
Good for
- before diving into a project that requires deep concentration
- while waiting in a crowded coffee shop, with your phone in your pocket
- when you're feeling on edge after a long day at work
Tips
- The pauses are not a race. Adjust them to what feels right for you.
- Experiment with this pattern at various times of the day to see how it affects your mood.
- If the full count feels restrictive, reduce each number by one. The consistency of the pattern is key, not the duration.
Please note
If holding your breath causes dizziness or discomfort, just breathe in and out slowly. Don't force it. If you're pregnant, or have a heart, blood pressure, or lung condition, consult a doctor before attempting breath holds.
If this rhythm does not suit you, try 6-2-6-2 breathing for a long wait, 4-6 breathing for anxious moments, before you go back to something hard or 4-7-8 breathing: 4 rounds for a long wait.
