How to use Double-inhale sigh for the hours after people leave, on a day that started badly
Simple counts — 3 · 8 — and a circle that keeps time.
Follow the circle. It counts for you.
How it works
Stack a small second inhale on top of the first, then let it all go through your mouth. A day that started badly does not have to stay that way. Notice what's solid: the floor, the chair, your own weight.
Why it can help
It is the least elegant exercise here and often the most effective in the moment.
The pattern, in seconds
| Phase | Length | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Inhale | 3s | 0s |
| Exhale | 8s | 3s |
One round is 11 seconds. At the default 5 rounds this practice runs 55 seconds — about a minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.
Good for
- when you have been given bad news and need to keep functioning
- when someone has annoyed you and you need to not react
- in a hospital corridor, waiting for news
Tips
- Do the last round slightly smaller than the others. It makes stopping easier.
- Rest for a few seconds between rounds if the pattern feels demanding.
- There are no holds in this one, which makes it a good choice if breath-holding makes you anxious.
Please note
The double inhale is gentle, but if you feel lightheaded, reduce it to a single inhale and a long exhale. Stop if you feel dizzy. If you have a heart or lung condition, check with a doctor before starting a new breathing practice.
If this rhythm does not suit you, try 5-7 breathing exercise for the end of the working day — before something difficult, Coherent 6-6 breathing: 10 rounds for a night shift, after eating too much or 4-8 breathing — 4 · 8 — for Monday morning, when you have woken up too early.
