How to use Beginner box breathing for a hard conversation, when you are somewhere unfamiliar

2 · 2 · 2 · 2 breathing: the easiest version of the square.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

The pattern is a square — 2, 2, 2, 2 — and you trace it with your breath. It travels well. Hotels, spare rooms, other people’s sofas. Let the physical world hold your attention.

Why it can help

The rhythm is deliberately unremarkable. Unremarkable is easier to keep up when your hands are shaking.

One round is 8 seconds. At the default 5 rounds this practice runs 40 seconds — about a minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • in the car, parked, before you go inside
  • when you have five minutes and no idea where to start
  • when you wake at 3am and the room feels too quiet

Tips

  • Do it before you need it once, so that it is familiar when you do.
  • You can do this with your eyes open. Nothing here requires privacy.
  • If holding for the full count feels tight, drop every number by one. The shape matters more than the size.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
