How to use 7-11 breathing for Friday evening, when nothing else has worked today

7 · 11 breathing: a long, slow ratio for when you have time.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

Breathe in through your nose for 7 counts. Then out for 11, slowly, without pushing. Nothing else has worked today. That is not a reason to skip this. We'll stay close to sensations rather than ideas.

Why it can help

The pause at the end of a long exhale is usually longer than you expect. That gap is part of the exercise.

One round is 18 seconds. At the default 5 rounds this practice runs 90 seconds — about 1 minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • when you are tired but cannot afford to be
  • when you notice your shoulders are up near your ears
  • when you have read the same paragraph three times

Tips

  • The pauses should never feel like a competition. Shorten them if they do.
  • If your mind wanders to counting the rounds left, that is normal. Come back to the numbers.
  • Nothing is held here, so there is no moment where you are waiting for permission to breathe.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
