Breathing exercise · 7 · 11

How to use 7-11 breathing for a study session, when you are on your own

The pattern is 7 · 11, which is a long, slow ratio for when you have time.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

Breathe in through your nose for 7 counts. Then out for 11, slowly, without pushing. Being on your own is not required, but it does make this simpler. Notice what's solid: the floor, the chair, your own weight.

Why it can help

It is hard to stay braced against something while breathing out slowly. The two do not sit well together.

One round is 18 seconds. At the default 12 rounds this practice runs 216 seconds — about 3 minutes — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • in the car, parked, before you go inside
  • in the two minutes after a difficult phone call
  • when the day has been fine but you still feel braced

Tips

  • You can do this with your eyes open. Nothing here requires privacy.
  • Sit upright. Your lungs work better when you are not folded in half.
  • Nothing is held here, so there is no moment where you are waiting for permission to breathe.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
