How to use 6-2-6-2 breathing for travel days, when you have been putting it off

A even and rhythmic, with brief holds on both sides pattern, counted for you on screen.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

In for 6, brief hold, out for 6, brief hold. A short, steady cycle to wake up on. You have been putting this off. Starting is the only step that matters. Simple things first: contact, weight, temperature.

Why it can help

Because nothing is held for long, there is no buildup of tension in the chest.

One round is 16 seconds. At the default 8 rounds this practice runs 128 seconds — about 2 minutes — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • in a hospital corridor, waiting for news
  • when you wake at 3am and the room feels too quiet
  • as a way to mark the end of the working day

Tips

  • If you have a cold or a blocked nose, skip the holds and breathe through your mouth.
  • Practising when you are calm makes it available when you are not.
  • If holding for the full count feels tight, drop every number by one. The shape matters more than the size.

Please note

The counts are short but the rhythm is brisk. If you feel dizzy, lightheaded or short of breath, stop and breathe normally. Do not use this pattern while driving. If you have a heart or lung condition, check with a doctor first.
