Gentle box breathing: 6 rounds
6 rounds of 3-3-3-3, with the rhythm guided for you.
Follow the circle. It counts for you.
How it works
Let your breath flow in for 3 counts, pause for 3, exhale for 3, and pause again for 3. Keep going. Let your thoughts flow, but let them pass like leaves in a stream. Focus on the physical sensations of breathing.
Why it can help
You can practice this quietly, even during a busy day, without drawing attention. That's powerful. It's a subtle way to take control when you need it most.
The pattern, in seconds
| Phase | Length | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Inhale | 3s | 0s |
| Hold | 3s | 3s |
| Exhale | 3s | 6s |
| Hold again | 3s | 9s |
One round is 12 seconds. At the default 6 rounds this practice runs 72 seconds — about 1 minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.
Good for
- to ease the tension after a long journey
- when you're feeling cold and your chest is tight
- when you're startled awake in the dead of night and the silence is overwhelming
Tips
- It's okay if your mind drifts to the count. Just gently bring it back.
- Place a hand on your chest to feel the rise and fall of your breath.
- If you need to come out of a hold early, do so. It's always the right choice.
Please note
If holding your breath feels off, just breathe in and out slowly. Don't force it. If you're pregnant or have any health concerns, consult a doctor before trying breath holds.
