Breathing exercise · 2 · 2 · 2 · 2
Beginner box breathing for travel days, when you have been on screens all day
Rounds of 2 · 2 · 2 · 2, with the counting done for you.
Follow the circle. It counts for you.
How it works
Four equal sides: 2 in, 2 held, 2 out, 2 held. Nothing else to remember. After a day of screens, the eyes and the shoulders need this first. Let the physical world hold your attention.
Why it can help
You can do it silently, in a meeting, without anyone knowing. That matters more than it sounds.
The pattern, in seconds
| Phase | Length | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Inhale | 2s | 0s |
| Hold | 2s | 2s |
| Exhale | 2s | 4s |
| Hold again | 2s | 6s |
One round is 8 seconds. At the default 12 rounds this practice runs 96 seconds — about 1 minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.
Good for
- in the two minutes after a difficult phone call
- when the afternoon has gone flat
- at the kitchen table, with a cup of tea going cold
Tips
- Set a timer for the rounds you want, so you are not watching the clock.
- Try the same pattern at a different time of day and see whether it feels different.
- Never push through a hold. Coming out of it early is always the right call.
Please note
If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
If this rhythm does not suit you, try 6-2-6-2 breathing — 6 · 2 · 6 · 2 — for heavy days, after eating too much, 5-7 breathing for the morning, when you are cold and want to be warm or Quick 2-1-2-1 breath (2 · 1 · 2 · 1) for the hours after people leave, when you have already had a long week.
