Beginner box breathing: 10 rounds
You breathe in for 2 seconds, hold for 2, breathe out for 2, then pause for 2 – the most straightforward square you can try.
Follow the circle. It counts for you.
How it works
Four equal beats: inhale, hold, exhale, hold. No extra steps, no memorizing. Begin with what you can feel in your body; the rest of the day can wait while you settle into the rhythm.
Why it can help
Seeing the breath as a tiny box on the page gives your mind a simple shape to follow, keeping it from wandering to the worries that are pulling at you.
The pattern, in seconds
| Phase | Length | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Inhale | 2s | 0s |
| Hold | 2s | 2s |
| Exhale | 2s | 4s |
| Hold again | 2s | 6s |
One round is 8 seconds. At the default 10 rounds this practice runs 80 seconds — about 1 minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.
Good for
- while you’re waiting for the elevator on a crowded floor
- when a traffic light stays red and your thoughts start racing
- just before you step onto a busy subway platform
Tips
- If the count slips, gently return to the start of the round instead of guessing.
- Sit upright with your shoulders relaxed; feeling the weight of your body on the seat helps keep you steady.
- Treat each pause as a quiet break, not as a struggle to hold air.
Please note
If a hold makes you feel light‑headed or uneasy, skip the pauses and keep the breath smooth and even. Never force yourself to stay in a hold that feels uncomfortable. If you are pregnant or have any heart, blood‑pressure, or lung concerns, talk to a health professional before adding breath holds.
