7-11 breathing exercise for bedtime — when the weather has kept you inside

7 · 11 breathing: a long, slow ratio for when you have time.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

Breathe in through your nose for 7 counts. Then out for 11, slowly, without pushing. Bad weather is a decent excuse to stay in and do this. We'll stay close to sensations rather than ideas.

Why it can help

A long, unforced exhale tends to slow the heart a little. You may notice it in your chest before anywhere else.

One round is 18 seconds. At the default 8 rounds this practice runs 144 seconds — about 2 minutes — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • when the day has been fine but you still feel braced
  • when the afternoon has gone flat
  • after a long drive, to shake off the alertness

Tips

  • Keep your jaw loose. People clench it without noticing during holds.
  • The pauses should never feel like a competition. Shorten them if they do.
  • Because there is no pause, you can keep this going while walking or talking.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
