5-7 breathing exercise for creative work — if you have five quiet minutes
A five in, seven out pattern, counted for you on screen.
Follow the circle. It counts for you.
How it works
Breathe in through your nose for 5 counts. Then out for 7, slowly, without pushing. Five quiet minutes is enough. Ten is generous. Nothing abstract for the next few minutes.
Why it can help
You can keep the in-breath completely ordinary. Only the out-breath needs to be longer.
The pattern, in seconds
| Phase | Length | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Inhale | 5s | 0s |
| Exhale | 7s | 5s |
One round is 12 seconds. At the default 8 rounds this practice runs 96 seconds — about 1 minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.
Good for
- when you have read the same paragraph three times
- when your hands are cold and your chest is tight
- after a long drive, to shake off the alertness
Tips
- Two minutes done properly beats ten minutes done while checking your phone.
- Try it lying down with your knees bent if sitting upright feels like effort.
- Nothing is held here, so there is no moment where you are waiting for permission to breathe.
Please note
If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
If this rhythm does not suit you, try 4-6 breathing: 8 rounds for Friday evening, when you need something unremarkable, Beginner box breathing: 5 rounds for the early months, when you want something simple or Slow box breathing: 8 rounds for a big decision, if you are doing this instead of scrolling.
