Breathing exercise · 5 · 2 · 7

5-2-7 breath (5 · 2 · 7) for the early months, when you are too tired to try hard

5 · 2 · 7 breathing: five, a brief hold, then seven out.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

Take 5 counts to breathe in, hold for 2, and 7 to breathe out. Keep the out-breath unhurried. Too tired to try hard is exactly the right amount of tired for this. Simple things first: contact, weight, temperature.

Why it can help

Because the exhale is long, the next inhale usually arrives on its own, without you having to pull for it.

One round is 14 seconds. At the default 10 rounds this practice runs 140 seconds — about 2 minutes — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • after an argument, before you decide what to say next
  • at the kitchen table, with a cup of tea going cold
  • after a long drive, to shake off the alertness

Tips

  • Do not chase the feeling. If nothing happens, nothing happened.
  • Keep the effort mild. If you can hear yourself breathing hard, slow it down.
  • Holding your breath is optional in every exercise here. You can always breathe through instead.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
