Breathing exercise · 4 · 7 · 8

4-7-8 breathing for a big decision, when your attention is scattered

A in for four, hold for seven, out for eight pattern, counted for you on screen.

Ready0

Follow the circle. It counts for you.

How it works

In for 4, hold for 7, out for 8. The exhale is longer than the inhale — that is the entire instruction. Scattered attention is the raw material, not an obstacle. We'll stay close to sensations rather than ideas.

Why it can help

Because the exhale is long, the next inhale usually arrives on its own, without you having to pull for it.

One round is 19 seconds. At the default 10 rounds this practice runs 190 seconds — about 3 minutes — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.

Good for

  • at the start of a study session, to set the tone
  • before you open the email you have been avoiding
  • before a presentation, in the corridor

Tips

  • Try it once with a hand on your ribs so you can feel whether they are moving.
  • Rest for a few seconds between rounds if the pattern feels demanding.
  • If holding for the full count feels tight, drop every number by one. The shape matters more than the size.

Please note

If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
