Breathing exercise · 2 · 1 · 4
2-1-4 breathing for Friday evening, when you are cold and want to be warm
Simple counts — 2 · 1 · 4 — and a circle that keeps time.
Follow the circle. It counts for you.
How it works
Breathe in through your nose for 2 counts, hold for 1. Then out for 4, slowly, without pushing. Get a blanket first. Being cold defeats the point. Simple things first: contact, weight, temperature.
Why it can help
The long exhale is the working part. A slow out-breath is one of the few direct levers you have on your own arousal level.
The pattern, in seconds
| Phase | Length | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Inhale | 2s | 0s |
| Hold | 1s | 2s |
| Exhale | 4s | 3s |
One round is 7 seconds. At the default 6 rounds this practice runs 42 seconds — about a minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.
Good for
- as a way to mark the end of the working day
- when you have five minutes and no idea where to start
- after an argument, before you decide what to say next
Tips
- If you lose count, start the round again rather than guessing.
- Do it with your shoulders still. The movement should be in your ribs and belly.
- If holding for the full count feels tight, drop every number by one. The shape matters more than the size.
Please note
If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
