2-1-4 breathing: 8 rounds for creative work, on a low-energy afternoon
Simple counts — 2 · 1 · 4 — and a circle that keeps time.
Follow the circle. It counts for you.
How it works
Take 2 counts to breathe in, hold for 1, and 4 to breathe out. Keep the out-breath unhurried. Low-energy afternoons are what this was written for. Let the physical world hold your attention.
Why it can help
This ratio is used a lot before sleep, because a long exhale is what your breathing already does as you fall asleep.
The pattern, in seconds
| Phase | Length | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Inhale | 2s | 0s |
| Hold | 1s | 2s |
| Exhale | 4s | 3s |
One round is 7 seconds. At the default 8 rounds this practice runs 56 seconds — about a minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.
Good for
- at the kitchen table, with a cup of tea going cold
- when you cannot sleep and do not want to get up
- before you walk into a room full of people
Tips
- Sit upright. Your lungs work better when you are not folded in half.
- If you wear a watch that tracks breathing, ignore it while you do this.
- A hold should feel like a pause, not like running out of air.
Please note
If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
