Breathing exercise · 2 · 1 · 4
2-1-4 breath (2 · 1 · 4) for a long illness, when the day has been loud
Rounds of 2 · 1 · 4, with the counting done for you.
Follow the circle. It counts for you.
How it works
Breathe in through your nose for 2 counts, hold for 1. Then out for 4, slowly, without pushing. For days that were loud from the moment they started. Notice what's solid: the floor, the chair, your own weight.
Why it can help
The pause at the end of a long exhale is usually longer than you expect. That gap is part of the exercise.
The pattern, in seconds
| Phase | Length | Starts at |
|---|---|---|
| Inhale | 2s | 0s |
| Hold | 1s | 2s |
| Exhale | 4s | 3s |
One round is 7 seconds. At the default 6 rounds this practice runs 42 seconds — about a minute — plus a breath or two of ordinary breathing between rounds.
Good for
- in the car, parked, before you go inside
- before a presentation, in the corridor
- when you are the only person awake in the house
Tips
- If you wear a watch that tracks breathing, ignore it while you do this.
- The pauses should never feel like a competition. Shorten them if they do.
- Never push through a hold. Coming out of it early is always the right call.
Please note
If holding your breath makes you dizzy or uncomfortable, skip the holds entirely and breathe slowly and evenly instead. Never push through lightheadedness. If you are pregnant, or manage a heart, blood pressure or lung condition, check with a doctor before doing breath holds.
